So I experimented with the idea and thought of the rose petals like leaves on the street. After I'd sketched out the thumbnails of my piano with rose petals on it I started the composition sketch to get final placements right and work on the proper shading and coloring of the drawing. I thought the rose petals looked better as a blend of reddish colors than just as one solid red and I also worked to make the reflection on the black keys correct and realistic looking. After that I started up my final sketch, and while on the smaller drawings I'd had trouble getting a good amount of keys in, I easily managed to get a lot of keys on the paper.
This fix that I hadn't been expecting and had first thought would be a problem saved a lot of time for me and I was able to focus more on properly placing and proportioning things. I tried to do the shading and coloring of my final like I had on the composition sketch, as I had liked how the sketches look had turned out, and was pleased when the drawings ended up looking much like each other in coloring aspects. After some final shading on the keys I finished up and I'm quite happy with how my final drawing turned out.
Reflection: 1) Did you use a source for inspiration, then combine it with your own ideas to make it original?
- My source for inspiration for this project was the multitude of pictures I've seen of pianos. Pictures are often taken of pianos in perspective, some more unique than others, and sense I enjoy playing piano I thought maybe I would like drawing a piano in the perspective that people take pictures of them. To make this drawing my own original idea though I added rose petals. I've always liked the look of leaves on the road going off in perspective so I thought maybe I could reincorporate that into rose petals on a piano.
2) How did you respond to challenges that occurred as you worked?
- A lot of the challenges I faced during this project were related to getting the keys to go off in the correct perspective and making the black keys the right size compared to the white keys. The only way I could find to effectively face these challenges was to patiently adjust the drawing repeatedly until the perspective and proportions became correct enough for my liking. This means there was a lot of redrawing and drawing over again, but I think in the end I managed to do alright.
3) Did you consider how ideas would work before you tried them?
- I tried to imagine my ideas correctly by comparing them to things I already know. As I said before I liked the look of leaves going off in perspective and so I tried to reincorporate that type of look with the rose petals. I also considered how many keys I would have in my drawing as to make the drawing look more realistic, and while this task was actually a bit difficult in thumbnails and composition sketches it worked out fairly well in the final. Originally I had planned to measure out how many keys I would have depending on how long the piano went and how angled the perspective was, but that much work wasn't needed in the final. I also planned the lighting before hand so that some of the keys seemed whiter than others and so the wood of the piano would look nicer along with the black keys.
